Villa La Reina is situated in a very peaceful and intimate location within the Lim Channel (Bay of Lim) nature reserve, which is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Istria. The channel is a bit longer than 10 km and is surrounded on both sides by steep cliffs, some reaching up to 100 meters high. Its name comes from the Latin word "limes", meaning "border". The Lim Channel used to be the border between the territories of Pula and Poreč, while today it marks the border between Vrsar and Rovinj. The bottom of the channel hides many antique artifacts. It is believed that during "nevera" (summer storms), ancient ships would seek refuge in the channel, and while waiting for better weather, the crew would clean the vessels, throwing everything into the sea that did not survive the turbulent journey.
The Lim Channel area is also home to Romuald’s Cave—an archaeological site from the Paleolithic era and a fascinating speleological formation adorned with cave decorations. Another site, the Pirate’s Cave, is nested along the cliffs and is accessible only from the sea. The water in the Lim Channel is exceptionally clean, making it ideal for shellfish cultivation, fish spawning, and swimming. The channel is well-known for its high-quality oysters and mussels, which you can taste at a nearby restaurant, or we can have them prepared for you directly at the villa. The name "Lim Fjord" originated after the filming of "The Vikings" in 1958, starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. In the movie, the Lim Channel "played the role" of a Nordic fjord, a branding that was later used for commercial and tourism purposes until the Viking settlement built above the channel eventually collapsed.
